Binding Machine Lubrication

Binding machines are used for fastening loose pages, plastic covers, or fabric layers together using plastic or metal wires. Binding machine lubrication must be done frequently, even if the operator’s manual does not indicate the need to lubricate every point.

Binding machine lubrication must be applied to all parts of the machine that are in motion. Each point must be lubricated with a small drop of oil. Binding machine lubrication should be applied after every four or five hours of machine use.

Before oiling, take off the cover and rotate the hand-wheel in the normal rotating direction to locate all movable contact points on the machine. Continue to keep the machine rotating while oiling it, in order to ensure that all parts are well lubricated. Special attention is to be given to parts such as the hook race and the corresponding bobbin case as well as the needle bar because they are the main wear areas. If oil contamination is not a big problem for your job, oil the hook race at each change of the bobbin. The oiling of the hook race is difficult in bobbins that are inserted under the bed and is easy if the bobbin is loaded from the top of the bed.

Binding machine lubrication can be done using manual oiling systems or automatic oiling systems. Manual oiling systems require an operator on a regular basis. Automatic oiling systems can lubricate all parts at regular intervals. The oil in automatic systems can be distributed evenly using a pump. In automatic oiling systems, oil is filled in a reservoir. Larger oil reservoirs have calibrated oil indicator levels. Many binding machine lubrication systems have sight windows or bubbles showing the pressure of the oil in the system. Advanced pressure systems have adjustment needles or valves to control the flow of oil to critical points. All automatic oiling systems have an oil return mechanism.
